How to Save Instagram Stories Before They Disappear (All Methods, 2026)

Saving Your Own Stories (Built-In)

Instagram lets you archive your own Stories automatically. Open the app → tap your avatar → settings (gear icon) → Archive. Toggle Save to Archive on. From now on every Story you post gets backed up privately.

To get the MP4 onto your phone, open the archived Story and tap the three dots → Save video. Done.

Saving Someone Else's Story (Public Account)

A screenshot captures the screen at display resolution and compresses with JPEG noise. A proper download pulls the original file from Instagram's CDN at full resolution with the original bitrate. For Stories with text, music sync, or stickers, only the download preserves everything cleanly.

Also: Instagram does NOT notify users about screenshots of Stories anymore (that feature was removed in 2018). But it also doesn't matter — anonymous downloading is invisible regardless.

What About Disappearing Photos in DMs?
